CASA de RETIRO ESPIRITUAL
Home | Building
CASA de RETIRO ESPIRITUAL was designed by Emilio Ambasz in 1975. It localed at approximately 25 miles (40Km) north of Seville, Spain. The house is surrounded by the splendors of the Spanish countryside , perched on a low peak in the lush, green Sierra Morena mountains overlooking a man-made lake and a vast 1,000 Has estate where olive trees, evergreen oaks, and wild flowers grow and fighting bulls, horses and wild boar roam. Its rural setting provides a dramatic contrast to its stark ascetic look. “The design that first brought Emilio Ambasz to international attention as an architect is one of the most compelling architectural images of our time. Unforgettably, two tall white walls rise like sails from a green sea of grass. A steep cantilevered staircase climbs each of the walls to meet at the right-angled juncture of the two white sheets. This dual mirror like image soars mysteriously above a square sunken courtyard. Beyond this lies the house itself, waiting to be discovered, its alcove-like-rooms spread out amid serpentine skylights and openings.” A crazy house! Watch the video, here.

The Jetpack
Gear | Gadget
On Tuesday, an inventor from New Zealand unveiled what he calls “the world’s first practical jetpack” at the EAA AirVenture, the gigantic annual air show here. The inventor, Glenn Martin, 48, who has spent 27 years developing the devices, said he hoped to begin selling them next year for $100,000 apiece. It stands about five feet tall and its rotors are encased in two large ducts that look a bit like cupcakes. It rests on three legs. The Jetpack with twin rotors and its 200-horsepower engine which produces 600 lbs of thrust and can be piloted 30 miles in 30 minutes on a full tank of fuel gas - it carries five gallons. Operated by a joy stick-like control. “There is nothing that even comes close to the dream that the jetpack allows you to achieve.” Robert Thompson. Check out watch the video, you will know it how to fly.

The robots with ‘emotions’ who like a cuddle and can recognise faces

Heart Robot
Gear | News
Heart Robot, who has been programmed to react ‘emotionally’, depending on how he is treated, has brought out the bully in many of the visitors to a science event. The electronic puppet, created by scientists at the University of the West of England in Bristol, visibly relaxes in response to soothing, low sounds or a gentle touch. ‘Heart Robot looks like a cross between ET and Gollum (from Lord Of The Rings)and is about the size of a small child. ‘Different children react to him very differently. They either want to hug and cuddle him, and look after him like a doll or baby, or they just want to scare him.’ The Pic: Cuddle me: Designer David McGoran and his creation Heart Robot which has a breathing belly and beating heart. And I just want to say that, it is not good-looking. [ link ]

WAKE n BACON
Home | Clock
A fun alarm - WAKE n’ BACON by Matty Sallin, Daniel Bartolini, Hsiao-huh Hsu.
WHAT: An alarm clock that wakes you up with the smell and sizzle of cooking bacon.
WHY: No one likes to wake up, especially by an alarm. This clock gently wakes you up with the mouthwatering aroma of bacon, just like waking up on a Sunday morning to the smell of Mom cooking breakfast. Unless you’re Jewish.
HOW: A frozen strip of bacon is placed in Wake n’ Bacon the night before. Because there is a 10 minute cooking time, the clock is set to go off 10 minutes before the desired waking time. Once the alarm goes off, the clock it sends a signal to a small speaker to generate the alarm sound. We hacked the clock so that the signal is re-routed by a microchip that in responds by sending a signal to a relay that throws the switch to power two halogen lamps that slow-cook the bacon in about 10 minutes. if I don’t like bacon, could I change to others?

The ‘object’ by George Watson. His ‘object’ has won the New Designers Vtech award! A vision of how we could deal with the storage of digital data more physically and tangibly within the home, the system enables users to associate data to domestic momentos picking up on the way they are displayed around the home to create meaningful links between physical and virtual domains. for example if an image of a beach is taken, pebbles are often associated with the landscape. you may have a pebble in your house, so you would roll the pebble over the ‘object’ viewer and an images of the beach will appear. Touch Sight Camera
Gear | Design
Touch Sight is a digital camera for visually impaired people. This camera records sounds and displays imagery via 3D embossing allowing the person to relive the moment by two other senses, hearing and touch. It includes a unique feature which records sound for three seconds after pressing the shutter button. Touch Sight does not have an LCD but instead has a lightweight, flexible Braille display sheet which displays a 3D image by embossing the surface, allowing the user to touch the image. The sound file and picture document combine to become a touchable photo that is saved in the device and can be uploaded to share with others–and downloaded to other Touch Sight cameras. One of the 2008 International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) winners.
